When life imitates The Onion, or vice versa

This story, from the 9/21 issue of The Onion, entitled "Bill Introduced As Joke Signed Into Law" brings to mind several real-life actions on the part of our elected congress-morons, like McCain-Feingold and the recently passed Porkfest 2005.

And while the Onion story itself is well-conceived, well-crafted, and funny, I somehow couldn't bring myself to give it the belly laugh it probably deserved.

I find myself, to no avail, wishing our public discourse contained just a bit more critical thought, such as that expressed by Dr. Walter Williams in his latest op-ed on money, and the egregious wasting thereof.

Good Article.

It used be that the President and members of Congress took their oath to “protect and uphold the Constitution” seriously. Now they just throw (our) money around in whatever way they hope will buy the most votes and let the Supreme Court sort out the legalities. When was it decided that our elected officials were no longer the protectors of the Constitution?

When the Supreme Court does its job and threatens to limit the pork fest, Senators fight over nominees who may actually take the Constitution seriously. Horrors!

That's crazy, Patton. I had exactly the same reaction. Sometimes the Onion really does hit it on the head in a way that's not so much funny as bitter and angry and wistful. Hm. Like Lenny Bruce, or Bill Hicks when he wasn't frothing at the mouth.

Remember "God Angrily Clarifies 'Don't Kill' Rule"?

Do I remember “God Angrily Clarifies ‘Don’t Kill’ Rule”?

I have a copy of it that I read, along with that entire issue, every time I find myself calm and at peace with the world, the better to piss myself off.

And you're right - the parallel between (my) reaction to the two stories is just about perfect.
