Adventures in Euphemistic Sporting

To be honest, I didn't even know she was here.

If Google happens to be broken and you're curious (Google's already got 30 hits for that quote), I'll make the topic even more obvious with another:

If I was her adviser, I would tell her to go kick all the ladies' tails around for about four years and if she wants to try again when she's 20, 21 and grown up more, and maybe a better player, come on back.

(emphasis mine) Not a good week for the girl who claims to want to beat the men at the mens' game. I wonder how much of this silliness is driven by her sponsors?

There's no rule against women competing, it's just that, generally speaking, chicks ain't good enough. No woman has qualified since 1945.

2

Michelle Wie is also too young to vote still... my money is on her competing successfully at the PGA level before she's 21.

3

Forgive my lack of knowledge about golf, but I thought that women didn't compete directly against men in the PGA. Why is she?

4

Amplifying a bit, Michelle Wie is competing against the men (and has a number of times since she was 13) because she's quite good. When I say "quite good", I actually mean "way damned good".

I also think she can compete successfully on the PGA tour before she's 21 with several caveats:

1. "Compete" doesn't mean win. It means "Not finish last, make a cut, have a top-10 or top-20 finish"

2. She's awesome, but so are most of the guys who actually have PGA Tour cards.

3. The heart of my interest in this matter is a question whether they (her father, her agent, her sponsors) are risking destroying her by pushing her too far, too soon.

She could achieve otherwordly things and still not be as good as Tiger Woods, another prodigy raised to be a professional golfer. Not being as good as Tiger Woods is hardly something to cause shame and embarrassment. But Tiger has never given any cause to question whether he had been properly trained to avoid implosions in his personal & professional life. Wie was DQ'd in her very first LPGA tournament. I blame the pressure, not her ability.

And I'd hate to see her brought along too far, too fast, and have her miss becoming what she really could become - one of the most amazing athletes we've ever seen.
