The Best and the Brightest

Dammit, David Halberstam died. He was one of the finest reporters - and finest writers - of his generation, and he will be missed.

(I imagine we can expect a story from Christopher Hitchens within the next day or two about how Halberstam was really a second-rate hack who slew children to collect their shoes.)

Regarding Hitchens, I hope you're wrong, but if he gets some of his drink on, you can never tell.

Halberstam was a great one, whose work I first saw in Playboy, back when I was still allowed to read it.

When I heard he died, I was taken aback. When I heard he'd died in a car wreck, while pursuing an interview, I was slightly less taken aback. Odd, no?
