The Spiders

Except for the President Gore bit, this is extraordinarily cool. Just read the damn thing. Discuss in the comments.

The thing that fascinated me, and I talked about this a bit in the comments here, is the way that the spiders are controlled. A weapon system like that could (potentially) take advantage of every strength we have as a nation and soceity: Our ability to organize very capable, effective ad hoc groups. Technology in general, and computers/networking in specific. Decentralized processing of information - applied to intelligence. An abundance of leisure time, and propensity for gaming.

A self-sorting hierarchy would rapidly develop in a user community like the one in the comic. Military and Intelligence types could quickly see who the most reliable users are. And there would be plenty. Imagine Tom Holsinger or Trent Telenko from over at Winds of Change with access to that system. But more than anything, we would have the benefit of many eyes on the problem - and a built in mechanism for sorting the information.

In a few years, this kind of thing might be possible.
