Sad but Probably Overdue
CBS News is reporting an HIV scare in LA's porn community. Apparently this is only the latest such outbreak. Porn talent tested positive a few times in the '90s, and then, as now, a sort of quarantine was imposed while who had scenes with whom (and whom and whom) was sorted out. New production has been suspended in the meantime.
You know, I had some pithy remarks about... well, about this. But in retrospect I just can't seem to work up humor or snarkiness over people with HIV, be it people in porn, trucking, advertising, insurance, whatever.
But all in all, I have to admit I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often.

Well, the porn industry,
Well, the porn industry, being an industry and an insanely lucrative one at that, has done a very good job over the years of policing its workers along these lines. A strung-out porn star can still work-- indeed, will want to work more and do anything-- but a porn star with HIV destroys everyone they touch.
I wonder if the scare didn't originate with a someone or someones who came up through the less-reputable sides of the industry into the big time, and picked up the HIV back when they were desperate and stupid?
I'm not that big a porn consumer, but I'm glad they do what they do, for the most part. This won't be good for anyone.

Reading another article on the same topic, I was almost moved to shed a tear for this:
"The scare began this week when it was announced that a performer had tested positive for HIV, which he apparently contracted while shooting a film last month in Brazil.
A 22-year-old Canadian actress he worked with after returning to the United States, also has tested positive for HIV. The woman has worked in the adult film industry for only three months."
Your life's in a, well, strange place... You figure, what harm can it do to make some good money doing a porn flick... Wham! Aids. That sucks.
