Murther most civilised

The Volokh Conspiracy have a link to a new chess resource, The Chess Predator, which to my admittedly untrained eye looks to be very handy indeed. I'm not much of a chess player. I have never had the wherewithal to play moot games against myself to refine my tactics and strategic thought, and any success I may have had has been thanks to my ability to once in a while pull off a spectacular feat of half-accidental derring-do. However, Goodwyfe Johno periodically reiterates her intention to learn chess, and I periodically get talked into it. Next time, maybe it will stick.

One thing I never understood... when your horsey jumps your castle thingy, does it have to stay all on the black squares?

Heh. I was taught the game at a young age, and it wasn't until much later that I realized my Dad never, ever took it easy on me, beating the Shiite out of me with great regularity.

Which, of course, made it pretty sweet the one or two times in my entire life when I actually beat him.

But I, too, tended to rely on something stupid and heroic, in lieu of, you know, any actual strategy. I've got about half of my Dad's chess books now (something like 30 volumes), and cannot muster the desire to delve too deeply into them, since I'm unlikely to do so just to then play with myself.

Or something like that.

However, if I can locate it, I'll be happy to forward for your amusement a chess game implemented as the winning entry in a contest several years ago, requiring less than 5K of Javascript.

The fact that it's small and done in Javascript seems to make it fit, by definition, into the "Severely Autistic" genre, and as such, I remember having won against it a number of times.

I suck at chess.

My playing syle, such as it is, always ends up the same: jockey around for a bit, then a huge slaughter of both sides' power pieces (from which I usually come out badly), then a mad scramble to defend myself as well as I can before I ultimately die.

I understand the capabilities and limitations of everything in the game, but have alot of trouble integrating them to best effect.

I can beat the computer chess program, but only on the Severely Autistic difficulty level.
