Frickin Swedes
The other night I finished up a game of Axis and Allies on the old computer. This I do more for relaxation and nostalgia than for any sort of challenge, because the PC version of A&A is rather pathetic. The AI opponent couldn't fight its way out of a wet paper sack with a chainsaw. Once, I started with just the Eastern United States, two armor, two infantry and a fighter. I conquered the whole world.
But anyway, this was the final order of battle as I attacked the last stronghold of my tenacious, canny and ultraviolent opponent:
I won, in case you were curious

Have you played the computer
Have you played the computer version of Avalon Hill's Third Reich? It can be found for free at many abandonware sites on the 'net. It actually is pretty close to the original tabletop game and the AI isn't half bad.
I shall have to attempt to
I shall have to attempt to find that. The AI in the official A&A game is truly and comprehensively retarded. Playing it is akin to a very long and colorful version of solitaire. Not exactly challenging, but somehow deeply fulfilling.
Since I rebuilt my PC after the virus infestation, I've reinstalled CivIV, but it won't run. I know that I can make it work, because I did when I first got it. But having it installed but not functional satsifies my need to have it installed, yet still allows me to actually get other things accomplished.
Careful, bro. Those Swedes
Careful, bro. Those Swedes can be shifty...
Favorite wargame was Talonsoft's "Operational Art of War" series. Big realistic fights, NATO standard symbology, and an AI that was sometimes pretty resourceful and aggressive- alot depended on how I fought and how buggy the scenario was. They had a great Second Korean War scenario I got alot of mileage out of, and the big NATO/Pact/WW3 fight across Germany was a good one too. Huge, but fun.
But alas, it doesn't work with XP and there's no intention of making it so.

What did you do with the rest
What did you do with the rest of the US territory in that game? Give it to one of the other countries? And did you put forces on it? I'd be interested in seeing if I can match your accomplishment(probably yes, but we'll see), but I need to know what the baseline is here.
I distributed the other US
I distributed the other US territories to the other powers. I think I gave Western US, Hawaii, Eastern China and most of the Pacific Island territories to Japan. The balance of the islands, including the Caribbean, went to the UK. The Soviets got Alaska and Western China. Brazil and Mexico went to Chermany. I'm pretty sure that's how I set it up.
Garrisons - most of the countries I gave away had more or less the same troops that were on the territory when it was American. I think I gave the germans an extra infantry or two in Mexico, and gave Japan something like what Western US had, maybe a little less, and no bomber if there was one.
The Soviets and Germans could't attack first round. The Brits couldn't because of the navy on Eastern US - I kept that, though I lost it first round. The Japs didn't attack.
If you survive the first round, you have a decent shot.
