Declaring Independence
It struck me a few days ago that now is the time for the blogosphere to declare its independence from the political order. In particular this is the time for the left wing blogosphere to send a strong signal to the politicians they're trying to get elected: We are watching you. We've been watching the right for a while now, and believe me when I say that we're going to be watching you the second you're elected. The GOP hoodwinked a lot of real conservatives and turned into garden variety crooks in astonishingly short order.
Let's try hard not to let that happen again. Let's tell them we're going to be watching. Positions on the issues don't matter if you're a crook and your ethics are in question. The starting point is honesty in opinion, self-reflection, and ethical discourse. These are dangerous times, and dangerous times require realism. Elected representatives need to engage in realism for the country as a whole; not for one part of it, or for themselves.

This post is really funny
This post is really funny coming from a Canuck. Haven't you turned American yet?

Not to take my normal political place near-opposite you, but I do have two legitimate quibbles.
Keeping an eye on the bastards you've elected isn't a left-wing or right-wing thing; it's universal. The right has done a truly poor job of holding its recent electees to the principles on which they were elected. Harriet the Wonder Dog aside (since she was a loser even without the hullabaloo), too many of the failings of the present Washington leadership have been allowed to continue, including rank fiscal irresponsibility, DHS in both construction and practice, fake immigration debates, and other matters.
Finding a way to get listened to, short of including a tithe with each entreaty that the elected grow a set of balls, has been hard. And if the left doesn't watch out, they'll see the same thing should their favorites get elected.
Your second chunk on the requirements we should have for our bitches in DC, too, is non-denominational, and applies fully to pols of both parties.
Last quibble: "The GOP hoodwinked a lot of real conservatives and turned into garden variety crooks in astonishingly short order." Bullshit. :) They did so in the normal amount of time, just as politicians in office too goddamned long will tend to do, on either side of the aisle.
