Undocumented Immigrants get IDs

This Fox story informs us that California will allow illegal aliens to get driver's licenses.

The legislation, by Sen. Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, would help undocumented immigrants get drivers' licenses by allowing them to submit a federal taxpayer identification number or some other state-approved form of identification to the Department of Motor Vehicles instead of a Social Security number. (emphasis mine.)

I think that California is quite purposefully ignoring something very important here, as their euphemistic description of illegal aliens indicates.

These are illegal aliens, for chrissake! We can have a meaningful and interesting debate over all the issues surrounding immigration except for this one. Access for foriegners: easy or hard? How long can they stay, and what can they do while they are here? How many immigrants a year, from what countries, and with what skills? How quickly can we assimilate them, and how should we do it? What requirements for naturalization? Reasonable people can differ on these issues, and I've heard good arguments for many sides of the argument.

But, illegal immigrants do not deserve the benefits we extend to our own citizens, and to those who have moved here legally and dealt with the insane bureaucracy of the INS. They are here illegally. If caught, they should be immediately deported. Any "undocumented immigrant" who shows up at a CA DMV should be instantly shown the door, and warned not to come back.

I am prepared to welcome any citizen of any nation regardless of race, creed, color, or hairdo - provided that they come here in accordance to the laws of this nation. Otherwise, get the hell out. It is ridiculous to extend to them taxpayer funded benefits when their very existence in this country spits on the laws we live by. And amnesty for illegals is a slap in the face to all the immigrants who did jump through all the hoops to get here legitimately.

They don't need an ID. They need a bus, ship, train or plane ticket home.

Agreed. Except in those insane instances like Cuba where illegally is the only way most of them can get here, and yet most of them seem to want to.

But, this obviously comes down as an indictment of US policy against Cuba, rather than an endorsement of extending immigrant rights to illegal Cubans. (Illegal Cubans. Nice construction, that. Entertainingly vague. "Send that one back! He can't salsa dance! Don't you know that's against the law?)

I am going to say that as a legal resident (but not citizen) of this country, it pisses me off to no end that a bunch of people who are here illegally are going to get things like green cards, driver's licenses, and all kinds of crap I have had to struggle to get, and have had to pay my dues for.
I have paid massive amounts of taxes, started several companies, provided jobs indirectly for dozens of people. I have done my part. I don't begrudge the taxation -- it's OK. But for cripes sake, it's totally unfair to put some illegal guy AHEAD of me in the queue for a frickin' green card, just because he's a member of some particular socio-cultural group!!!

Ross,
Absolutely. A friend of mine who happens to be a filthy German, but also a doctoral candidate in history, married to an American, and an utterly upstanding person to boot, had a fourteen-month-long ordeal just to get his green card. Paperwork lost, paperwork "lost," unannounced policy changes, staff changes, mistaken identity, incompetence, and the dull malevolence of the tenured government worker all conspired to make this perfectly responsible legal immigrant feel like an unwelcome suspect. God FORBID that he actually would have tried to travel to Africa to do dissertation research, never you mind that he is a historian of African colonialism. If he'd done that, he would't be allowed back in the US.

And yet "undocumented immigrants" will get a drivers licence in California. Short of citizenship papers, a drivers' license is the single most important piece of ID you can have-- it legitimizes a galaxy of transactions.

Hey-- I got an idea. Why not just make all these illegal dudes citizens? It'd amount to about the same thing.
