On Constitutions
For our collective edification, via Fark (the source of all hard news) comes this editorial from the Taipei Times about the differences between the US Constitution and the proposed European Union Constitution. Money quote: "Madison is a better guide to an effective constitution than is Descartes."
Food for thought, and plenty to disagree with too.

The editorial makes the same
The editorial makes the same point as I did in my AntiAmericanism post - "The US Bill of Rights is a list of individual rights against the state. In contrast, the Charter of Fundamental Rights, which constitutes Part II of the proposed EU constitution, includes a long list of rights to services provided by the state."
And of course, the state has complete control over the mechanisms and requirements for those services. This is a long list of powers granted to the state. If everyone must have decent housing, then the state has the power to enforce that.
Creepy. I wish the EU would just go ahead and form a fascist dictatorship so we can kick the shit out of them and get it over with. The waiting is killing me.
