This Just In: The Pope's A Killjoy
Hey... shouldn't you be in church?
Pope John Paul (news - web sites) on Friday said Sunday should be a day for God, not for secular diversions like entertainment and sports."When Sunday loses its fundamental meaning and becomes subordinate to a secular concept of 'weekend' dominated by such things as entertainment and sport, people stay locked within a horizon so narrow that they can no longer see the heavens," the pontiff said in a speech to Australian bishops.
I know the Pope is obliged to say this kind of thing, it's his job and all, but does he really want all the Catholics of Parma, OH to make an all-or-nothing choice between church and the Cleveland Browns?

Good point.
Good point.
I suspect he does, as a matter of fact. I also suspect the result wouldn't be what he would hope.
Though probably what he would
Though probably what he would expect. For all the exhortations to good behavior, I don't think that the Pope is unaware of what people in fact are. But at least someone is saying Football is not the only thing you should be doing on Sunday.
Of course, you can go to early Mass and still be home in time for the early afternoon games. Best of both worlds!
When Sunday loses its
When Sunday loses its fundamental meaning . . .
Does he mean the fundamental meaning that they made up in order to distinguish the Catholic Church's ceremonial days from the Jewish Shabbos?
Buckethead, you're right.
Buckethead, you're right. Football isn't the only thing to do on Sunday. There's also laundry, cooking, baking, antiquing, sweet love in the afternoon, watchin' DVDs, writing letters to loved ones, calling your parents, housecleaning, washing the car, hiking, NASCAR, baseball, hockey, college basketball, homebrewing, poker, jamming on guitar, surfing the internet, foodshopping, gardening, library trips, second jobs, third jobs, side jobs, sleeping late, meeting friends for brunch, reading the New York Times over lox, bagels, and Costa Rican coffee, installing a new sound card in the ol' Dell, fishing, beachwalks, going up to Woodmans' for fried whole-belly clams, visiting museums, getting haircuts, going to the mall, napping, catching up on your bills, cleaning out the winter closet, painting the house, watching a polo match, installing a new shower, relaxing, and childrens' soccer.
