Instinctive aiming

Loyal reader John Veit emails us with news of US Patent 6023874.  Why is this important?  Well, for John, it's important because he's the patent holder.  For us, it's important because when the zombies come, we will want an instinctive, automatic aiming system so that we can rapidly engage and de-brain our undead assailants.  And that's what John has come up with:

This looks like an exceedingly simple mod for a handgun. And though I haven't tried it, it looks like the sort of thing that would work. I imagine the grip would feel weird at first, but I'm sure I could cope with that if the benefits were there.

The video mentions that this method isn't recommended for the M1911 handgun. My personal sidearm is a Kimber custom classic, modeled closely on the 1911. Perhaps John can chime in in the comments on whether this prohibition is just for actual 1911 models, or pretty much any .45 on that model. I'd certainly like to try this system out.

My understanding is that this grip didn't actually improve point-shooting speed or accuracy much. It certainly isn't the preferred grip in modern practical pistol competition.

Yeah, but now you'd have the thingy on the gun to line your finger up properly.

Sounds weak when I say it like that, but I think it would make at least a bit of difference. I'd like to try it, anyway.

Have you tried a two-hand, thumbs-forward grip with an isosceles stance?

With a little practice, you'll find that you index to roughly the same spot each time, making it easy to point-shoot — and pretty easy to use your sights, too, if you've got a moment.

I've never tried that one. I just grabbed my gun and tried it out, it feels odd. I typically used my left hand to cup under the grip in a two hand stance. I haven't really done much shooting in the last few years - there are no ranges convenient to where I live. But it seems that there's a new one just opened, and I wanted to get back into it.

It'd be fun to try out some new stuff.

I highly recommend finding an instructor who teaches IDPA- or IPSC-style shooting. In my experience, practicing on your own without being pointed in the right direction is... less than efficient.

If I'm using a pistol when the zombies come, something has gone horribly wrong.

Now I'm like, well duh! Truly thankful for your help.
