I'm a know something, thank you

Ever wanted to know something about video codecs? I'm giving you all or nothing: read this link and know everything, or don't and know nothing. Actually, it's a well written piece, and if the mysteries of codecs have you befuddled, it should sort you right out.

Oy. Have a look at the comments to the piece now. The author of the original got torched in the comments, and appears to have deserved it, 1400 Diggs or not.

Luckily, it was a constructive torching, as one of the torch bearers also came bearing better links:

They didn't even mention the VP* codecs... not exactly "everything". I use Ogg Theora myself, since it's completely open and free. It's derived from VP4, I believe. Also the other great thing about Theora is that it uses Ogg Vorbis audio, which is way better than MP3 or WMV audio in terms of quality.
