Friday Funtime Quizzery, Bolt-Action Tuesday Edition
The funny thing about this result is that I just can't see well enough to hit much beyond 250m consistently. Even 300m is a little, um, hit or miss, and I never qualified Expert because of it. I fired an SVD once, and was hitting at 500m+ with no optics, but still I doubt that I would ever be capable of real reach-out-and-touch-you shots that real snipers can make. And my personal safety equipment doesn't include far shooters. I do have a Chicom SKS, but even with its robust round I wouldn't trust it much beyond 200, 250m and anyway it's in rough shape. Instead I rely on close-in stuff. Well, it's all about the threat you preceive you're facing. For me, it's zombies, and I'm putting my stock in point defense and escape.
"You scored as Sniper Rifle. You like sharpshooting. Stealth, accuracy and range are your best friends. So you a need sniper rifle (if you don't already have one)."

I scored 94% on sniper, 75% on shotgun. It ranked me high on revolver, but I think I'll stay with my .45, thank you. Just 'cause it's a semiautomatic doesn't mean it's not reliable.
I think a Barret .50, a short barreled pump 12 ga., and my Kimber .45 would handle most contingencies.
No reason to count out the
No reason to count out the .45 ACP wheelguns, like the S&W 625. Google it- it's at least as burly as your Kimber, the Sig P220, or other full frame semis.
I'm actually trying to justify a S&W Model 629- that's the .44. Ultimate zombie round.

I was happy to see a picture of the sniper version of the rifle I own (HK91) pop up.
If you have read "World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War," you know that the best way to take zombies down is headshots at distance. An accurate and reliable semi-auto is the best.
Bram,
Bram,
Well I can't comment because I've not read it. I can only emphasize my thinking on this, which in turn drives my strategy: get the fuck away, and go from there.
Whatever is close enough to hinder escape gets Sig-ed or takes the double-ought taste test. If it's farther than that, I'm gone and the slavering undead will be the slower guy's problem.
Now, if we're talking about securing a location for more long-term settlement, I might see the utility of rifles, but my plan doesn't go much past immediate safety.
It's just the trade-off I had to make; budgets constrain all weapon acquisition programs, be they national or personal in scope.
I highly recommend the book -
I highly recommend the book - it was rather disturbing. Max Brooks also wrote the "Zombie Survival Guide" which I have not read.
One of the key lessons of the book is that simply running is not a viable long-term strategy.
And not just when facing
And not just when facing eldritch horrors or the undead, either.
Bram,
Bram,
Keep an eye out the next couple days for a more substantial post on that very topic.
I admit I was rather
I admit I was rather indifferent to the zombie threat before reading Max Brooks. He definitely stroked my paranoia.
