Roman numerals are odd. That number could be 78, because the fifteen in front of the ninety three would be subtracted. Thank god for whatever nameless hindu invented arabic numerals. Though he kind of fell down picking base 10. Just because some people need to count with their fingers doesn't mean we should be prevented from using a more useful system like base 12. Think about it - english measurements would be very nearly metric if we used base twelve. Dozens, grosses - tens and hundreds. Ten inches to the foot, etc. Thirds of things wouldn't have repeating decimals.
The French, typically, had a brilliant idea but screwed up the implementation.
