The Day The Clown Cried

James Lileks thinks this piece should be taught in J-school, and I think so too. An amazingly well written story about, well hell, a down on his luck $300-an-hour children's entertainer in the Washington DC area. Yeah, yeah, you say. Whatever. Bo-ring! Ooh! Seinfeld's on!

Wrong. Just go read the piece. If they ("they") were to make me an offer, my right arm for the ability to write a piece that good, I'd consider it a bargain.

I read that a few days ago when Lileks first pointed it out. Some outstanding writing. Just when I thought it was going to be another trite commentary on overdone parties for the children of privilege, he turned the tables and focused on the personal struggles of the entertainer. Very well-crafted and utterly engaging.

That is without doubt one of the best articles I've read. I've read stuff from him before - he has a goofy humor segment at the beginning of the weekend magazine in the local rag. Sometimes funny, sometimes not. I never would have thought, from reading that, that he could produce things like this article.
