Art Whores for Castro

Found this over at Phil's. It's well worth a read. The studied indifference of the beautiful people to the very real suffering of any Cuban who dares speak against Uncle Fidel is an abomination. Where is their support for those who speak truth to power, and subvert the dominant paradigm, when that power is a communist? People who fall over themselves saying America should be a pariah among nations for our pragmatic alliances with unsavory types during the cold war gush at the thought of meeting Castro. Sick. But read this piece, to get another angle on the sickness.

I must admit to some confusion. The piece was long and I did start to scan after awhile. Did I miss evidence that the gallery is actively supporting Fidel Castro in word or deed? Or are they just selling shit?

Most good-sized record stores sell Cuban music. Cuban music is a bonafide artform. I haven't heard any protests against stores selling the Buena Vista Social Club but I have been busy and may have missed it. Anyway, this is art that wins Grammies so it's not exactly low-profile.

Here's what I'm getting at: Fidel Castro is a scumbag leader in a world full of scumbag leaders. In true scumbag leader fashion he makes bad things happen to anyone who dares to voice an independent opinion. Scumbag leaders do evil to the innocent the world over every dang day. Why does Castro fit so many crosshairs so neatly? And why does he in particular cause the bile to rise in such an apoplectic manner for so many people?

Does it truly transcend the fact that he's a scumbag leader who's a commie?
