Marathon Man

A word to the wise: if you've gone almost five years without your regularly scheduled cleaning at the friendly neighborhood dentist, you may as well just never get one. I feel like my teeth have been peeled, and it hurts to breath through my mouth. The hygienist was gentle with the five megawatt, ultrasonic pain causing device, but I kept thinking of the line from Fight Club, "You can swallow a quart of blood a day and not get sick."

And because I had been so lax in attending to keeping my oral cavity in tip-top condition, I have to go back in a month do do it all over again.

Well, at least you were able to eat lunch without salad dressing constantly dribbling down your numb lips and face. I like that our dentist uses a lot of novicane, but it took a full 5 hours to wear off. Of course, I don't have to go back for another 6 months, and thanks to the fact that this dentist didn't get her degree via correspondence school like our last dentist apparently did, I will probably not need anymore work for a long time!

Did you have scaling done, or is that what you go back for in a month?

I went without a dentist for about two and a half years, and one return trip was enough to ensure my good behavior evermore.

After the hygenist finished with the ultrasonic pain device (which had required four separate cutaneous injections of painkiller), my petite Indian dentist, Dr. Sarita, looked into my mouth and tisked gently as she shook her head. Then she rammed a needle through the back of my palate into the base of my jaw. The fillings had begun.

Three weeks later, my teeth were brown and my tastebuds were burned off thanks to the antibacterial mouthwash I had to use to combat the recession of my gums, which had advanced almost so far as to require total-mouth gum surgery.

There's nothing so good as a sledgehammer for driving home a point. I now floss and brush like it's my job.

This was the scaling. What is this "painkiller" you speak of? I go back in a month for more scaling, and then the buff and polish. Apparently, she could do no more cleaning without removing my gums. After that, then the bleaching and finally I get to have my left upper incisor crowned, to replace an aging field expedient tooth patch.

The only upside is that I still have only one cavity. I tried to get my orginal (and until yesterday, only) dentist to remove that tooth entirely, because it was weak; and for the encouragement of the others. Dr. Ricci insisted that we just put in a filling. Pansy.

I just had a tooth pulled in my upper jaw, the dentist gave me a shot in the upper palate.. it was the worst pain I ever felt. He used his fist to jam it through I swear.. and I felt it crunch.. then he did the same thing right around the tooth.. he leans on my head when he's pulling the tooth out and I have his hand prints on my face.Last time he pulled a tooth he had my by the hair on the top of my head. My side of my face is still numb two days later. Dont think I'll be going back there any time soon.
